Courses I Teach
Texts & Contexts I: Writing as Craft & Inquiry (EN 11). This course introduces students to the many kinds of reading and writing they will do across the curriculum and beyond. Students learn to draft, revise, and edit their own texts and respond effectively to the texts of their peers.
Texts & Contexts II: Writing About Literature (EN 12). This course builds on the reading, writing, and critical inquiry work of EN 0011, focusing on the development of increasingly sophisticated reading, writing, researching and inquiry skills through the exploration of literary texts and their contexts.
Literacy & Language (EN 172). This course examines the concept of literacy as it is represented in fiction and non-fiction texts. Reading widely — in memoirs, essays, fiction, creative non-fiction, and drama — we will consider individual experiences with literacy, language, and schooling, as well as the relationship between literacy and power. The course includes a service learning experience that connects issues from the course to the real context of a local elementary school.
Contemporary Children’s Literature (EN 292). This course explores children’s literature published in the United States between 1950 and the present. The course will give you both the chance to re-acquaint yourself with books that you enjoyed as a child and encounter books you missed when you were young. You will read literary criticism on children’s literature, as well as information on careers in children’s books publishing.
Teaching & Writing (ENW 311). This course is designed to enhance your skill as a writer and their preparation as future teachers of writing in elementary and secondary schools. Students have opportunities to write in a variety of genres and for a range of audiences. This course will help students develop the knowledge, skills, and competences to meet the NCTE/NCATE Standards for the Initial Preparation of Teachers.
