As Faculty Chair of Service Learning, I work with the staff of the Office of Service Learning to promote and support service learning at the University. We help faculty develop service-learning projects where students can contribute to and learn from the community beyond campus.
Students in my “Literacy and Language” (EN 172) regularly participate in Fairfield University’s partnership with Cesar A. Batalla School. There they gain first-hand experience with literacy by tutoring second graders in reading and writing.
I am grateful to have been involved for many years with Mercy Learning Center, a literacy center for women. The Center provides basic literacy and life skills to nearly 1,000 low-income women a year, helping them learn English, attain a high school diploma, achieve U.S. citizenship, and gain skills to lead their families and communities.
